Breaking down mental health barriers within the firearms community

In the world of hunting and firearms in NZ, there's a silent struggle that often goes unnoticed—a battle with mental health. For myself and Sam Manson, this struggle hits close to home, inspiring us to pioneer MentalHunts, a YouTube hunting channel and a platform dedicated to eradicating the stigma and barriers surrounding mental health within the firearms community.

MentalHunts isn't “just” another YouTube hunting channel; it's a channel about fostering a supportive environment where individuals can openly discuss their mental health without fear of repercussions as well as some amazing hunting trips NZ has to offer. The episodes aim to provide education, resources, and a sense of community for firearms license holders, farmers, hunters, hunting guides, and anyone else whose occupation involves firearms.

My journey with MentalHunts began with a personal struggle, a struggle I’ve battled for most of my life. In October 2019, I found myself grappling with mental health challenges. However, this time when I reached out for help, I faced an unexpected consequence—my firearms license was revoked. This experience shed light on a significant issue within the firearms community: the fear of seeking mental health support due to the potential threat of losing one's license.

But I didn't let this setback deter me. Instead, it fueled my determination to create change and a space where individuals could seek support without facing judgment or repercussions. MentalHunts is a place where mental health conversations are not only welcomed but encouraged.

Alongside Glen stands Sam Manson, a seasoned hunting guide with over a decade of experience. While Glen focuses on mental health advocacy, Sam brings his wealth of knowledge to the table, offering invaluable hunting tips and insights for newcomers to the sport. Together, they aim to not only break down mental health barriers but also encourage people to embrace the therapeutic benefits of nature and hunting.

For many individuals, hunting isn't just a hobby—it's a way of life and is deeply ingrained in many people's lifestyles. It's a chance to connect with nature, challenge oneself, and find solace in the great outdoors. Encouraging individuals, young and old to embrace the outdoors is crucial, considering the proven benefits of nature on mental well-being. Getting out and in the hills is what many people need to get clarity and we should be also encouraging and educating young people and getting them outside. However, amongst the firearms community, mental health often takes a backseat. MentalHunts seeks to change that narrative by emphasising the importance of getting into nature, normalising mental health conversations, checking in on your mates and knowing what to do if needed.

During a recent hunting trip filming our next episode for MentalHunts we spent a week in the mountains with the firearms safety authority discussing the delicate situation between firearms owners and seeking help for your mental health. The bulk of discussions were on the roles and responsibilities of the health practitioners, the police, the firearms safety authority and most importantly you, the Firearms license holder.

Through a combination of educational resources, community support, and expert advice, MentalHunts aims to empower individuals to prioritise their mental health without sacrificing their passion for hunting and firearms. Whether it's resources for accessing professional help, or simply a supportive community to lean on, MentalHunts strives to break down the barriers for those of us struggling in silence with mental illness.

As we embark on this journey with MentalHunts, let us remember that mental health is just as important as physical health. By breaking down the barriers and stigma surrounding mental health in the firearms community, we can create a safer, more supportive environment for all. Together, let's embrace the power of conversation, camaraderie, and the great outdoors.
